"If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange these apples then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas."

(via imgTumble)Dead soldier’s friend tells why a funeral dress was the only way to honour him. The Observer.
“Kev was like my brother – we would have done anything for each other.
We said that whoever died first, the other one had to wear a pink dress with green spots to the funeral – and we shook on it. It was mainly his idea and the more I think about it, I’m sure Kevin knew something was going to happen.
I looked for the exact dress but couldn’t find one anywhere.
I eventually picked up the green one in Primark and bought the pink pop socks to make it look even sillier. It’s what Kev would have wanted.
Kev told his whole family about the pact, so I couldn’t back out. I had a word with him at the graveside and asked if he liked the color – I’m sure I could hear laughter coming out of the ground.
Kev was a true hero and someone I’m proud to call my best mate.”Respect.

After going home for Thanksgiving break, I realized that I have gone through many experiences that I would not have expected. When talking with my friends, who all go to different schools, I noticed this was happening with their lives, too. Of course, I have heard from many that college is a life changing experience and that I would notice how much I, as well as my friends, have changed in just one short semester. I did not, however, believe it.
I did try in the beginning to show a different side of myself that I did not get a chance to exhibit in high school. I tried to be more outgoing – introduce myself first, attend club callouts – the usual “let’s make friends” montage. It worked for a while, but then I recognized I did not feel like myself anymore. I always had a sense of security in high school. I was so sure of who I was, who my friends were, and what I knew. That all changed in a few short months at college.
As I sit on the floor of my dorm room now, I see ahead of me winter break. Three long weeks I can spend relaxing at home, not worrying about an exam or project. Three long weeks I can spend getting reacquainted with my old self, my old room, and my old pals.
But is that what I need right now? To revert back to my old habits? It has been said that old habits die hard…so I know I could fall into them as easily as falling into the soft cushions of the couch in front of the fireplace. Part of me is comforted by the idea of visiting with the “old me” or rather the “young me”. But part of me also wants to allow for this “new me” to get some breathing room. Let’s see what she can do…
C - There is contrast between the colors the artist used. This is done to draw attention to the flowers in the center, which are white, against the dark background.
C – There is also a contrast between the shapes. Geometric shapes are used to create organic forms; triangles and circles compose the central flowers. The geometric shapes give the art an organized appearance while the organic forms lend a presence of nature to the piece.
R – There is repetition of the flower. The artist recreates it for a total of four times in the work. They are all the same size, color, and shape, and also have similar ornate details and beading about them.
R – There is also repetition of the flower theme in both the foreground and background. Although subtle, different types of flowers are included in the texture of the background. There is this repetition so in the work so it can be unified throughout.
A – The four flowers are arranged in radial symmetry at the center of the square piece. This method calls attention from the viewer onto the diamond of flowers. It also makes it appear as if the black background surrounding the flowers is blank space when in actuality, there is a design in the background.
P – The four white flowers are very close to each other because of their similar characteristics. Placing them all together also concentrates the single color white into one area. This would cause a sharper focus from the audience on that area of the piece because it is the central image. It also makes the flowers have the affect of jumping off the piece of wood towards the viewer because they stand out so much more.
All of these qualities – contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity – give the effect that these flowers could also be eyes. The way they are created makes me believe that the picture is depicting the nighttime and it is taking place in a wooded area because of the dark background and floral theme. Then, I assume that the flowers in the foreground are the eyes of some creature hiding in the bushes, being camouflaged by the flowers. If this is an accurate assumption, the mood of the piece is one of secrecy. Along with this could be a feeling of terror or even curiosity and hesitancy. This description could be interrupted by a myriad of viewers.
C- The image of Casper is the largest out of all four ghost, and the two people, because he is the title character and the most important.
C- The flashlight contrasts against the background that is depicting a night scene because it draws attention to the two people that are smaller, yet still important to the movie sequence.
R- Repetition is represented in the colors because the creators of the poster used shades and tints of blues. They did this because they want to ensue a spooky feeling for the movie, since it is Halloween themed.
A- The images are aligned down the center: such as Casper, the title, the castle and the two main human characters. Also coming out of the center are the three other ghosts. The artist probably wanted it like this so the viewer’s line of vision was directed through the most important images for the movie.
P- Casper the ghost is right in the middle of the title “Casper” because he is the title character. Below the title are the other ghosts because they are related to Casper and the development of his story. Below the ghosts are the two human characters, who are standing close together because they play father-daughter roles in the film.
This is an enjoyable poem because it represents the different ways someone can learn and apply their knowledge.
I pictured while reading this poem Whitman sitting in a classroom listening to a professor drone on about how to interpret charts that apply to the stars. This is a very common experience for many students, no matter what the subject matter may be.
What Whitman does next, however, is what most students only dream of doing. He leaves the lecture because he is “tired and sick”. He never gives a reason why, but a fellow scholar, like myself, can interpret this to mean he is bored of only learning about the stars and hearing someone else describe them when all he wants is to see them for himself.
No matter how enthusiastic or knowledgeable a professor is, the lesson will never hold any meaning unless the pupils can find some use for it. What I appreciate most about this poem is Whitman going out to experience it for himself rather than waiting for someone to give him the opportunity to do so.
